Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) encompasses the comprehensive study and practice related to disorders in human communication. Within this field, speech and language pathologists play a crucial role in assessing, diagnosing, and treating individuals of all ages who experience a diverse array of communication challenges. These challenges encompass not only speech and language disorders but also extend to voice disorders and difficulties related to swallowing, whether they are developmental or acquired in nature.
It's important to recognise that the scope of this profession has evolved significantly. Today, speech and language pathology goes far beyond solely managing speech and language disorders. It encompasses a broader spectrum of communication-related issues, reflecting the growing recognition of the intricate and interconnected nature of human communication.
As a graduate of this course, you will be able to work professionally as a Speech and Language Pathologist in a wide variety of fields, nationally and internationally, including schools, community health centers, hospitals, rehabilitation units, nursing homes, private practice and specialist disability services. You could also take on academic and research roles.
